OneDrive - How to Free up Storage Space (for Citrix)

When you use OneDrive, all of your documents are in the cloud. This is represented with a white cloud with a blue outline. These documents will be available to you whenever you are connected to the internet. If you are not connected to the internet, you will not have access to this file locally.


To have access to the file, it will need be accessible offline. When it is accessible offline, it will have a green checkmark next to it. This means that even if you are not connected to the internet, you will be able to access this file. What this does is it has a copy of the file on your computer. This means that the document is taking up some storage on your computer. It depends on the document size, but it takes up storage nonetheless. For a regular computer, this isn't a huge issue. 


However, when you are within Citrix, this can be a big issue since the Citrix desktop has very little storage space. If the documents take up too much space, you will get an error from the desktop within Citrix that there is not enough space. You will need to free up space to prevent this from happening. This is a very fast process. 


Here is how to do that:

1. Navigate to the document that you don't need locally anymore.

    a. Notice that these two documents are local indicated by the green checkmarks.



2. Select the document.

3. Right-click the document.

4. Select the option Free Up Space.



5. Now, the document will sync and be backed up to the cloud indicated by the white cloud with the blue outline.



6. If you need the document again, you open it normally, and it will download again to your computer.


Over time, all of the documents you have worked on will take up too much space within Citrix especially. It is best practice to do this on a regular basis.
